Direct/Indirect vs. LED Down (Direct) Light
Lighting is one of the most critical decisions you’ll make when building or retrofitting your facility. Pickleball lighting directly affects playability, customer satisfaction, and overall experience — and it consistently ranks among the top two factors players evaluate. In many cases, lighting quality can determine your success, especially if a competitor nearby invested in better-engineered pickleball lighting.
The most common mistake facilities make is relying on direct/down lighting — typically warehouse fixtures that aim straight down. These fixtures provide poor glare control and, more importantly, fail to properly illuminate the ball and the full cubic playing envelope from floor to ceiling. While downlighting can brighten the floor surface, it struggles to illuminate the airspace above the court where the ball spends most of its time.

Serviceability
Brite Court’s indoor pickleball lighting products are 100% field-serviceable, unlike the majority of LED fixtures on the market — many of which are imported and effectively “throw-away” products. Know Your “BUG” Rating
Every outdoor LED fixture sold in North America is required to be tested and must publish its “BUG Rating.” These are important metrics you should know about any fixture you select for your court lighting, or any sports environment.
What is a BUG rating?
A BUG Rating is a required performance standard for all outdoor LED fixtures sold in North America. It measures Backlight (B), Uplight (U), and Glare (G). These metrics tell you how a fixture will perform in real-world environments, especially outdoor sports facilities and residential-adjacent courts.
What does “B” (Backlight) mean?
Backlight refers to the amount of light that spills behind the fixture. This matters for property lines, neighbors, and residential areas. Fixtures with excessive backlight often need glare shields to control unwanted spill.
What does “U” (Uplight) mean?
Uplight measures how much light escapes upward into the sky. Well-designed tennis and pickleball fixtures usually have minimal uplight and are commonly Dark Sky compliant. In contrast, many generic LED area lights tilted above 10° can break compliance and contribute to skyglow.
What does “G” (Glare) mean?
Glare is one of the most critical metrics for sports lighting. It is rated on a scale from 1 to 5 (5 being the worst). Most high-output LEDs land in the 4–5 range, but even a one-point reduction is noticeable to players. Many competing lights sit at the highest glare levels, while several of Brite Court’s engineered fixtures achieve a 3–4 glare rating, dramatically improving comfort and ball visibility.

Is a high BUG Rating ever acceptable?
In certain applications — such as extremely high mounting heights or unique building constraints — a higher BUG Rating may be unavoidable. However, it should always be part of the design discussion so you can balance performance, comfort, and compliance.

Should I choose Direct/Indirect, Indirect, or downlighting for indoor courts?
Direct/Indirect is the #1 system recommended by USAP and the ASBA, and what most facilities choose — its 35–40% uplight fills the entire airspace so the ball stays visible at every elevation. Indirect (our HEX fixture) is an excellent, glare-free option for bubbles and fabric structures. Standard warehouse downlighting aims straight down, which brightens the floor but leaves dark zones above the court — the most common lighting mistake. We’ll help you pick based on your building and budget.
How much can I save versus metal halide or fluorescent?
Facilities typically see major reductions in both energy and maintenance costs compared with 1,000-watt metal halide or fluorescent fixtures, backed by a 100,000-hour serviceable fixture life that keeps ongoing maintenance low.
Will outdoor lighting bother my neighbors?
