Indoor LED Tennis & Pickleball Lighting

Indirect, Direct, or Direct-Indirect?
Shopping for indoor tennis or pickleball lighting, you’ll run into three terms. Here’s what each one actually means — and why most facilities land on the same answer.
Indirect
Light is aimed up and bounced off the ceiling, reaching the court as soft, even, glare-free illumination. It’s the classic choice for fabric structures, domes, and air-supported “bubbles,” where you want a comfortable, shadow-free scene with no bright fixtures in a player’s line of sight.
Direct
Light is aimed straight down onto the playing surface. It’s efficient and puts a lot of light on the court, but without carefully engineered optics it can introduce glare and hot spots — which is why fixture design matters far more than raw brightness.
Direct-Indirect
The best of both: roughly 35–40% of the light goes up (indirect) while the rest is directed onto the court. The result is whole-room illumination — ceiling, walls, and floor all lit — so the ball stays visible through its entire flight.

Direct-Indirect LED Indoor Tennis Lighting
Brite Court Direct-Indirect tennis lighting systems are watt for watt the most efficient and highest performance tennis lighting available anywhere on the planet. In the pictures above and the videos below pay special attention to how well the ceiling, floor and walls are all evenly illuminated. The new LED Direct-Indirect system at 4752 watts per court delivers a savings of 64%, with three levels — Tournament, Recreational and Vacant.
The LED Tennis lighting upgrade at Columbia Basin Racquet Club. Their Metal Halide Indirect lighting at 15,120 watts per court only had average light levels of 66 foot-candles. They replaced it with a new Brite Court LED Direct-Indirect system at only 4,752-watts per court resulting in average light levels of 88 footcandles.

Know Your “BUG” Rating
Every outdoor LED fixture sold in North America is required to be tested and must publish its “BUG Rating.” These are important metrics you should know about any fixture you select for your court lighting, or any sports environment.
What is a BUG rating?
A BUG Rating is a required performance standard for all outdoor LED fixtures sold in North America. It measures Backlight (B), Uplight (U), and Glare (G). These metrics tell you how a fixture will perform in real-world environments, especially outdoor sports facilities and residential-adjacent courts.
What does “B” (Backlight) mean?
Backlight refers to the amount of light that spills behind the fixture. This matters for property lines, neighbors, and residential areas. Fixtures with excessive backlight often need glare shields to control unwanted spill.
What does “U” (Uplight) mean?
Uplight measures how much light escapes upward into the sky. Well-designed tennis and pickleball fixtures usually have minimal uplight and are commonly Dark Sky compliant. In contrast, many generic LED area lights tilted above 10° can break compliance and contribute to skyglow.
What does “G” (Glare) mean?
Glare is one of the most critical metrics for sports lighting. It is rated on a scale from 1 to 5 (5 being the worst). Most high-output LEDs land in the 4–5 range, but even a one-point reduction is noticeable to players. Many competing lights sit at the highest glare levels, while several of Brite Court’s engineered fixtures achieve a 3–4 glare rating, dramatically improving comfort and ball visibility.
Why should I care about BUG Ratings?
BUG Ratings directly affect:
- Player comfort and reduced eye strain
- Ball tracking and visibility during fast rallies
- Light spill control onto neighbors and surrounding areas
- Dark Sky compliance
- Overall performance and professional-level playability
Understanding BUG Ratings allows you to compare fixtures accurately and avoid poor lighting choices that lead to glare, complaints, or compliance issues.
Is a high BUG Rating ever acceptable?
In certain applications — such as extremely high mounting heights or unique building constraints — a higher BUG Rating may be unavoidable. However, it should always be part of the design discussion so you can balance performance, comfort, and compliance.

Tennis & Pickleball Lighting FAQ
Should I choose Indirect or Direct-Indirect for my indoor court?
Both are indoor systems. Indirect bounces light off the ceiling for a soft, even, glare-free scene. Direct-Indirect adds a downlight component on top of 35–40% uplight, giving you whole-room illumination and higher light levels for the same or lower wattage. Around 90% of indoor facilities choose Direct-Indirect — but we’ll help you pick based on your ceiling, structure, and budget.
How much can I save versus metal halide?
Typical projects see 40–70% energy savings versus 1000w metal halide, plus a large drop in maintenance cost thanks to the 70,000-hour rated LED life. Real Brite Court upgrades have delivered 64–68% energy reductions while increasing light levels.
Will outdoor lighting bother my neighbors?
